First and foremost, you need to have a clear vision of your goal and a strong desire and commitment to achieve it. The goal should be inspiring, exciting and stretching. Note that there is a huge difference between a wish of ‘finding a better job’ and a must to ‘secure the job where you can utilise your potential in the environment that enhances your productivity and is in line with your values’. You need to be able to clearly define the key things that you want to do, experience, contribute, gain, see and feel in the new role. The clearer picture you create, the better chances you have of identifying and securing your new ‘better’ job.
The next factor that can extremely influence your chances of success is to understand your motivation behind the goal. You need to have strong enough reasons to accomplish what you want. Why is it so important to you to secure the new job? Have you lost the sense of fulfilment? Are you experiencing burnout? Have your priorities shifted? Do you need more money? The stronger reasons you have the easier it is to overcome any obstacles you encounter on your way. Your vision of accomplishing your goal and your pressing reasons will help you stay on the right track.
Finally, you need to develop your action plan. What steps do you need to take in order to find the right job? Examples could be the following: researching the market, conducting informational interviews, networking, reaching out to hiring managers and recruiters, developing a CV that presents your value proposition to your target employers, improving your LinkedIn profile, submitting applications, updating your professional wardrobe, practising your interviewing skills and more. Create a plan, set the dates in your diary by when you need to accomplish all the necessary steps and finally take action.
If you follow these three major steps and review your progress every day you will make a positive change in your career and most likely achieve the goal you set for yourself.
