This is one of the first questions my clients usually ask expecting to hear the exact answer provided based on their work history and qualifications. As a Career Coach, I never tell you where you should go but rather I stir your thoughts into realising the best solution for you at this stage of your career and life. We review your current situation from various perspectives to help you define the key aspects that require changing and help you decide where you REALLY want to go and what steps you need to take to reach your goal.
In order to select the most suitable option, you may start from finding or reminding yourself about your purpose. What brings you the most fulfilment and satisfaction? Is it serving the public, transferring your knowledge to others, leading organisational change, helping those in need, making lots of money, having the authority or is it something else? Does your current role reflect it? Once you realise your own purpose you can direct your career path in a way which allows it to unfold. Having a sense of direction can simplify the decision making process by helping you to filter out unsuitable options and dictate the areas where you need to focus your efforts.
Your career purpose should be underpinned with your talents, abilities and strengths therefore it is worth listing them and assessing the extent to which you utilise them in your current role. In the following step, you may make a list of the things you love doing - can you see any patterns here? And what about the things you must experience in order to be satisfied in your position? Examples may be related to your salary level, self-development, location, work environment, flexibility and many other aspects that could be important to you. The last but not least is developing your short-term and long-term goals - the driving force behind your career development and advancement. This is a complex process, but it serves greatly in clarifying your thoughts, gaining confidence and becoming effective at moving your career forward.
